This Plaza is the only purely residential one in the old city. It was occupied in the sixteenth century by disgruntled citizens after the commander of the Castillo de la Fuerza appropriated the Plaza de Armas for his military exercises, thus depriving Havana residents of their main public area. The Plaza Vieja is surrounded by beautiful colonial palaces and the Hotel Beltrán de Santa Cruz dates back precisely to that period. This mansion was built by the parents of Gabriel Beltrán de Santa Cruz y Aranda, who in 1770 received the title of Count of Jaruco and settled in this beautiful palace still known today as the house of the Counts of Jaruco. The mansion that was to become the Beltrán de Santa Cruz hotel later passed to the descendants of one of the most illustrious citizens of Havana, the Marquis of Cárdenas de Monte Hermoso. His guests included the eminent German scientist Baron Alexander von Humboldt and three French princes: the Count of Beaujolais, the Duke of Montpensier, and the Duke of Orleans, who later became Louis Philippe I of France.
